October is here! Bring on the pumpkins! Wait, hold on – it's Fire Safety Week first.

You may already be thinking “How are we going to fit it all in? We have important goals to prioritize!”

Yes, you do. I totally agree! BUT you won't want to miss this opportunity to make real world connections while also continuing to make progress towards our math and literacy goals.

Fire Safety Activities for the Resource Room

Throughout the day, I'm working in small groups targeting early literacy and math skills. The secret to fitting all in is to embed the high interest topics (especially holidays!) into our daily practice.

We always start with a read aloud. Our main book is Fire Fire by Gail Gibbons. Beware, it's a LONG one – we usually divide it up among three sittings. If we have time near the end of the week, we'll add new fire safety picture books to enjoy or they will be added to our independent reading (a.k.a. exploring books) time.

Our read aloud book serves as our “anchor” for learning during Fire Safety Week.

Next, we move into our small groups and independent work tasks. Students will remain focused on tasks aligned with their specific I.E.P. goals and objectives. Here's a few of our favorite activities that could be enjoyed anytime of year:

Fire Safety Week -Literacy Practice

We are always, always building our language skills. This looks like asking and answering questions, interacting with sight words and vocabulary, word work, and sorting (especially phonemic awareness tasks). All of these types of activities are based on Fire Fire by Gail Gibbons using this sensory bin set:

These sensory bin task cards include sentence building using the following mentor sentence from the text:

We also add these sentence building activities to our small groups, plus centers (for students who are ready):

The picture above shows a digital sentence building activity above using Seesaw, but there's also a hands-on (printable) set included! They are both in Fire Safety Sentence Building Activities.

Fire Safety Week -Early Math Practice

We didn't forget about math! Task cards are included in the sensory bin set to keep our skills sharp with identify numbers, counting, subitizing, and number bonds (composing and decomposing). You can differentiate by choosing which task cards to add to the bin!

Fire Safety Week – Task Boxes for Independent Work

Looking for more practice activities for Fire Safety Week?

Add these two task boxes to your independent centers, early finishers, or morning work:

As much as I love all things pumpkin, I definitely don't want to miss learning with these exciting activities. I have yet to meet a first grader who says “Fire engines? No thanks!” 😂

I hope your students love these activities, too!
