I’m linking up with Kacey for a fantastic Five for Friday:
PLUS, today is the final day of Teacher Week at Bloghoppin‘
Please note: I had to skip Thursday’s Sanity Savers because I’m still searching for them. I will be reading everyone’s post very carefully (and take notes!).
I’m jumping in today for:
(is that coffee??)
My FAVORITE subject of all time is:
1st grade reading intervention-style, which means Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Concepts of Print, Decoding Strategies, and Sight Words.
I also like to add in Shared Reading and Close Reading during the intervention block. My rationale (versus solely focusing on Guided Reading), is the more exposure my students have to high interest reading materials, the more motivated they will be. I also want to keep increasing their verbal comprehension while our decoding skills catch up.
99/9% of the time my readers are significantly below grade-level, so motivation from high quality literature can have a positive impact on attitude. To me, success is my student independently applying their strategies to push themselves to read a self-selected book. It makes me happy just thinking about it!
Speaking of happy, I also just received:
Um…WOW! This book is fabulous!
I needed another book on reading like I need more shoes, but this is WORTH IT!
Although, math is not my favorite…I’m making a huge push this year to make Eureka Math/Engage NY more accessible to all my learners. I’m thisclose to figuring it out, which is a little late considering this will be my 3rd year using it.
Today I introduce hands-on fun with our independent math bags:
We focused on practicing our procedures to use the math tools independently (and appropriately), then clean them up. They were aces with the staying “mostly” quiet and taking care of their materials, but there was a bit too much playing (frown). We’ll keep working on it!
This was our 3rd week of school and the honeymoon is over.
It felt very inconsistent:
I can’t wait to see what today brings!
Here’s a cutie pic to end with:
We were making 6 with number bonds/number sentences ♥
Have a fantastic Friday!
